Palette’s Par

The bite in her bones told her to shadow sight
The bite in her bones told her to shadow

The bite in her bones told her to
The bite in her bones told her

The bite in her bones told
The bite in her bones

The hole in her heart
The hole in her heart drew

The hole in her heart drew her
The hole in her heart drew her to

The hole in her heart drew her to sketch
The hole in her heart drew her to sketch light

Spinifex, Rue, Bamboo

(For G. G.)

In June Jo wrote to her youngest daughter
thanking her for her company, for lunch
and for her views through frames of form

and fora. Recalling Jode’s observation
that the preferred and the deferred are
nuances within the binaries carrying

old and new, led Jo to see a canvas
suggesting strands of spinifex, rue and
and bamboo – inviting Ben, Barbara,

Ian and Jody to continue their pauses
at the gallery of causes and its off-
shoots from the interior to coastal

plains, where painters and poets entrust
their labour to frames on rock, on walls,
on windows, on linen and paper.
